BigFix - UX & Workflow Redesign
BigFix is a complex, enterprise-scale SaaS platform used by IT departments to manage and secure all of their organization's devices Collaborated with the UX team as a Product Designer to modernise the product’s interface, ensuring all UI enhancements met WCAG accessibility standards, refine user flows, and deliver a high-quality design handoff for development.
Scaling down complexity, scaling up accessibility: Redesigning enterprise IT management.
Reporting
Overview
The Reporting module empowers Security Analysts and IT Managers to convert raw operational data from tens of thousands of endpoints into clear, actionable insights—ensuring continuous infrastructure compliance and risk assessment.
The Challenge
The legacy reporting interface suffered from significant data fragmentation and usability friction:
- Cognitive Overload: Dense data sets presented in unoptimized text blocks and rigid tables made identifying non-compliant devices slow and error-prone. prior to rendering final outputs.
- Rigid Customization: Users struggled to build tailored reports based on custom business metrics (e.g., segmenting devices by OS type or security status).
- Context Switching: Reviewing individual device details required users to navigate away from the primary report view, breaking their analytical workflow.
UX & UI Solutions
To address these pain points, the redesign focused on three strategic interventions:
- Guided Custom Report Builder:: Introduced a structured step-by-step creation flow (Data sets → Charts → Preview) allowing users to select appropriate data visualizations (Distribution over time, Percentage of a whole, Comparison) prior to rendering final outputs.
- Visual Data Hierarchy & Dashboards: Integrated clean, scannable visual widgets (e.g., bar charts for Type by OS and Computer by Device Type) above data tables to deliver immediate high-level system status.
- High-Density Interactive Tables: Redesigned data tables to support high information density with sortable columns (OS Family, Agent Type, Device Type), clear visual status indicators, and streamlined row selection to speed up batch comparisons.
Scenario
An IT Security Lead needs to generate and schedule a quarterly compliance report showing non-compliant devices, organized by OS type and location, to share with internal auditors.
Results
- 3x Faster Setup: Drastically reduced the time required for IT admins to configure and export custom compliance reports for security audits.
- Enhanced Scannability: Improved data hierarchy enabling Security Analysts to spot critical endpoint vulnerabilities within seconds.
User management
Overview
The User Management module allows System Administrators to configure Role-Based Access Control, permissions, and streamline user onboarding while ensuring enterprise-level security compliance across complex IT organizations.
The Challenge
Managing permissions within enterprise endpoint environments introduced significant operational risk and complexity:
- Security & Compliance Risk: Dense data sets presented in unoptimized text blocks and rigid tables made identifying non-compliant devices slow and error-prone.
- Rigid Customization: Users struggled to build tailored reports based on custom business metrics (e.g., segmenting devices by OS type or security status).
- Lack of Visibility: Administrators lacked a clear, single-pane-of-glass overview to audit user roles, active status, and last login activity across large teams.
UX & UI Solutions
The redesign focused on introducing clarity, governance, and seamless onboarding flow
- Granular permissions and roles: Structured clear visual role designations (e.g., Security Analyst, Patch Operator, Helpdesk) separating read-only auditors from actionable system operators to prevent privilege creep.
- Guided Multi-Step User Onboarding Drawer: Designed a streamlined wizard (User → Role → Summary) supporting both IdP (Identity Provider) integration and local authentication, reducing setup errors.
- High-Density User Management Directory: Created a clean, sortable table featuring real-time status indicators, roles, typo and activity tracking to manage individual user profiles. without losing directory context.
Scenario
A System Administrator needs to onboard a new Security Analyst, verify their identity via email, and assign them granular, role-based access without granting full admin privileges.
Results
- 60% Reduction in Setup Time: Accelerated the creation and assignment of new operator profiles across enterprise IT teams.
- Zero-Trust Alignment: Enforced granular access control, ensuring operators only interact with endpoints within their assigned scope.
Filters
Overview
The User Management module allows System Administrators to configure Role-Based Access Control, permissions, and streamline user onboarding while ensuring enterprise-level security compliance across complex IT organizations.
The Challenge
Isolating targeted endpoints in high-density enterprise software created severe operational friction:
- High Technical Barrier: Legacy filtering forced users to write manual Relevance scripts or rely on rigid dropdowns, alienating non-technical operators and slowing down urgent security tasks.
- Complex Multi-Condition Logic: Users lacked an intuitive way to combine spatial, temporal, and system attributes (e.g., Target devices in Milan AND Running Windows 11 AND Inactive for > 24 hours)
- Repetitive Workflows: Analysts frequently needed to run the exact same queries for weekly audits, but had no way to save, reuse, or share complex filter sets.
UX & UI Solutions
The redesign introduced a visual, progressive filtering engine with flexible conditional logic
- Visual Conditional Block Builder: Designed a modular filter builder using explicit AND / OR logic blocks, allowing operators to construct multi-layered search conditions through intuitive, structured inputs.
- Contextual Tokenization & Tagging: Replaced raw text inputs with interactive filter tokens/chips, giving users clear visual feedback and easy one-click removal of parameters.
- Saved Filters & One-Click Execution: Integrated a dedicated sidebar for Saved Filters and Favorite Filters, alongside direct action triggers (e.g., Remediate, Save Filter) at the base of the table to seamlessly turn search results into remediation actions.
Scenario
A System Administrator isolates unresponsive endpoints in the Milan Datacenter using progressive conditional logic. The administrator saves the query as "Milan Datacenter - Non-Compliant Devices", sets its visibility to Public, and restricts execution rights strictly to Helpdesk, Patch Operator, and Security Analyst roles for streamlined cross-team remediation
Results
- 60% Faster Vulnerability Targeting: Drastically cut the time required for security teams to isolate vulnerable endpoints during critical patch deployments.
- Reduced Query Errors: Replaced error-prone manual syntax with visual guardrails, lowering the entry barrier for Tier 1 helpdesk and junior IT staff.
